The Royal Variety Performance is an annual gala held in the United Kingdom with the reigning monarch present. The West End production cast members were delighted to perform at the Royal Variety Performance in 2008 at the London Palladium for the upper echelon of the British Royal Family. Like other successful Broadway shows, The Lion King debuted in the United Kingdom at the Lyceum Theatre in the West End in October of 1999 and continues to captivate audiences. It is now considered the fifth longest running Broadway show of all time, as well as the highest grossing Broadway show. The musical continued it success on Broadway, making its move to the Minskoff Theatre. The Broadway production official premiered in October of 1997 and then officially opened that November.

It instantly became a grand success before its Broadway premier at the New Amsterdam Theater. On July 8, 1997, The Lion King debuted at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, MN. It ends with Simba as King and the balance needed to continue the circle of life. Simba is reconnected with the spirit of his father, Mufasa, who encourages him to demand a confession from Scar, but the battle between Simba and Scar lead to Scar's death. It is in the second act that audiences see how the disruption in succession with Scar as King is affecting the whole of the interconnected jungle. Without his family, Simba becomes an adult in the company of a meerkat and warthog who teach him the ropes of living in the jungle from there perspective on the food chain. During the act, Simba grows feeling regret from having convinced himself that he is guilty of killing his father and not his uncle Scar. Audiences quickly learn that Scar, Mufasa's brother is disappointed in losing his opportunity to be King. The first act opens with the Circle of Life with King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi introduces the new cub, prince Simba. What is fascinating about the musical is that Disney's animated characters come to life as the cast in animal costumes that are accompanied by giant hallowed puppets. The Disney classic animated motion picture, The Lion King, has now been adapted into a musical with music written by, not other than, Sir Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice.

There will not be performances on Christmas Day or New Year's Day. The Pantages Theatre offers showings on Tuesday at 7:30 PM Wednesday at 1:00 PM and 7:30 PM Thursday at 7:30 PM Friday at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM Saturday at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM and Sunday 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM.
